With Epoch, Adcade Makes It Easy For Designers And Developers To Build Cross-Platform, HTML5 Ads

People have been talking about the death for Flash for years and years, and now it seems likethe nails are finally being driven into the coffin, particularly in the online ad industry.
But Rob Cromer, co-founder and CEO of New York City startup Adcade, said the shift to the HTML5 format won’t be easy for everyone. There are teams of designers and developers who’ve spent years working with Flash products and workflows, and you can’t expect all of them to become proficient in HTML5 immediately.
That’s why Adcade is launching a new version of its Epoch ad builder, which is supposed to allow designers and developers to create HTML5 ads using familiar tools.
We’ve written previously about Adcade’s Adscript framework for building HTML5 ads. Adcade has been using Adscript to create ads for its clients, but with Epoch, the startup is moving toward a self-serve model, combining a straightforward framework for developers with an interface for designers to create ads without any coding at all.
“We said, all right, we’ve got this amazing tech, so how can we create an interface to turn this into a self-service model and take the political complications of the ad industry out of it?” Cromer said.
As far as “political complications” go, there are other WYSIWYG ad builders, including Celtra and Flite, but Cromer noted that they’re usually tied to a specific company’s ad server. Adcade, on the other hand, is focused entirely on the ad builder, resulting in ads that can run on any ad platform, including DoubleClick, Sizmek and Atlas.
Cromer and his co-founder/CTO Buzz Wiggins demonstrated Epoch for me, taking digital storyboard from Photoshop and turning it into an ad in just a couple of minutes. Since Adcade’s LightSpeed technology exports a file from Photoshop with working layers, they pretty much had a functional ad from the start. However, they also quickly added animation effects in both the drag-and-drop view, and then in the code view. And a live preview showed them how their ad would look on multiple devices as they made their changes.
I don’t build a ton of ads myself, but the demo seemed to live up to Cromer’s claims of simplicity. Still, it felt a little old-fashioned to be talking so much about display and banner ads, particularly given the current excitement about native ads and the worries about ad blocking.
“A massive, multibillion-dollar industry is not going to collapse overnight because of ad blockers,” Cromer said. Instead, it’s going to “force us to ask the questions we should be asking anyway,” like figuring out the kinds of ads that consumers won’t mind seeing. Epoch can be a part of that solution, he said, because it offers an “extensible platform” that ad agencies that experiment with.
“I think traditional banner advertising is always going to have a have a place,” he added. “It’s a fast way for people to get their message across at scale.”
Epoch is available for $99 per user per month. Cromer said Adcade intentionally set the price point low so that it becomes a tool that’s used across the industry: “We want the entire ecosystem to come into it.”

Google New Logo Released

Google's new logo.
First they changed their name, now they’ve changed their logo. Googleintroduced a new sans-serif and slightly toned-down four-colour logo on Tuesday in the biggest redesign since 1999.

Google said the new design would soon be seen across all its products. Google’s homepage introduced the redesign with an animation that wiped away the old logo and drew the new one.

“Google has changed a lot over the past 17 years – from the range of our products to the evolution of their look and feel. And today we’re changing things up once again,” the company said in a blogpost.
The company said the redesign was meant to reflect the way that people interact with Google products across many different platforms, apps and devices.


“It doesn’t simply tell you that you’re using Google, but also shows you how Google is working for you. For example, new elements like a colorful Google mic help you identify and interact with Google whether you’re talking, tapping or typing. Meanwhile, we’re bidding adieu to the little blue ‘g’ icon and replacing it with a four-color ‘G’ that matches the logo.”
The logo has undergone many, mainly small, changes in its history. The colours have changed, 3D letters have been flattened, and an exclamation point came and went in 1999.
The move comes just a month after a major restructuring of the company was unveiled. Google is now owned by Alphabet, a holding company created by founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page to separate their money-making search engine company from the loss-making, “moon shot” projects like robot cars, medical research and internet-delivering balloons.

Today with the final Developer Preview update, we're introducing the official Android 6.0 SDK and opening Google Play for publishing your apps that target the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.

Get your apps ready for Android Marshmallow

The final Android 6.0 SDK is now available to download via the SDK Manager in Android Studio. With the Android 6.0 SDK you have access to the final Android APIs and the latest build tools so that you can target API 23. Once you have downloaded the Android 6.0 SDK into Android Studio, update your app project compileSdkVersion to 23 and you are ready to test your app with the new platform. You can also update your app to targetSdkVersion to 23 test out API 23 specific features like auto-backup and app permissions.
Along with the Android 6.0 SDK, we also updated the Android Support Library to v23. The new Android Support library makes it easier to integrate many of the new platform APIs, such as permissions and fingerprint support, in a backwards-compatible manner. This release contains a number of new support libraries including: customtabs, percent, recommendation, preference-v7, preference-v14, and preference-leanback-v17.

Check your App Permissions

Along with the new platform features like fingerprint support and Doze power saving mode, Android Marshmallow features anew permissions model that streamlines the app install and update process. To give users this flexibility and to make sure your app behaves as expected when an Android Marshmallow user disables a specific permission, it’s important that you update your app to target API 23, and test the app thoroughly with Android Marshmallow users.

How to Get the Update

The Android emulator system images and developer preview system images have been updated for supported Nexus devices (Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 & Nexus Player) to help with your testing. You can download the device system images from the developer preview site. Also, similar to the previous developer update, supported Nexus devices will receive an Over-the-Air (OTA) update over the next couple days.
Although the Android 6.0 SDK is final, the devices system images are still developer preview versions. The preview images are near final but they are not intended for consumer use. Remember that when Android 6.0 Marshmallow launches to the public later this fall, you'll need to manually re-flash your device to a factory image to continue to receive consumer OTA updates for your Nexus device.

 

What is New

Compared to the previous developer preview update, you will find this final API update fairly incremental. You can check out all the API differences here, but a few of the changes since the last developer update include:
  • Android Platform Change:
    • Final Permissions User Interface — we updated the permissions user interface and enhanced some of the permissions behavior.
  • API Change:
    • Updates to the Fingerprint API — which enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrollment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability.

Upload your Android Marshmallow apps to Google Play

Google Play is now ready to accept your API 23 apps via the Google Play Developer Console on all release channels (Alpha, Beta & Production). At the consumer launch this fall, the Google Play store will also be updated so that the app install and update process supports the new permissions model for apps using API 23.
To make sure that your updated app runs well on Android Marshmallow and older versions, we recommend that you use Google Play’s newly improved beta testing feature to get early feedback, then do a staged rollout as you release the new version to all users.
